Study: 59% of UK Drivers Let Dogs Ride Freely - uk dog drivers
Approximately 3.5 million UK dogs face danger from unrestrained travel.

The study found that 59% of drivers allow dogs to ride freely in their vehicles, while 26% permit their pets to travel with their heads out the window. This equates to an estimated 3.5 million dogs exposed to serious danger, based on the country’s 13.5 million pet dogs.

Risks of Unrestrained Dogs

TV vet Dr Scott Miller emphasizes that restraints are a legal requirement and can save lives during collisions. He notes daily encounters with accident victims, from minor injuries to fatalities, highlighting the consequences of negligence. “When you realise you have been putting your dog at risk, that will be the last time you make that mistake,” he said.

Allowing dogs to stick their heads out windows poses additional hazards. Adem Fehmi, a dog behaviourist and trainer, explains that this exposes pets to eye abrasions, debris injuries, and the risk of falling or jumping from moving vehicles. What may appear as enjoyment, panting with the wind, could signal stress rather than pleasure, Fehmi cautioned.

Safe Travel Solutions

To ensure safety and calm, experts recommend using crash-tested carriers. Fehmi advocates for placing dogs in secure enclosures, creating a consistent environment that reduces anxiety. “Placing your dog inside a crash-tested carrier in the vehicle is the best option for creating a sense of security,” he stated. Repeated use helps dogs recognize the carrier as a safe space, promoting relaxation during travel.

Crash-tested pet car seats further enhance protection. Miller notes that occupant crash-tested seats prevent movement during collisions, safeguarding both pets and passengers. Its design combines safety with aesthetics, fitting seamlessly in luxury car interiors.

Designing for Comfort and Security
