Chrissy Lafian founded SUKU Home in 2013.

SUKU Home, a distinctive Australian brand, is known for its playful bedding and loungewear with hand-painted patterns and colourful designs. Founded by Chrissy Lafian in 2013, the business works with skilled artisans in Bali to create unique textiles.

Chrissy Lafian‘s own family home in Melbourne’s west is a reflection of the brand’s eclectic style. The house, which Chrissy shares with her husband Chris Zancan and their four-year-old son Enzo, was purchased when it was only about 80% finished.

The Purchase

The property, a new build in Brooklyn, had been listed for sale by the owner who was unable to complete the project. Chrissy and Chris fell in love with the house’s unique architecture and bright, airy feeling, making an instant decision to purchase it.

The couple was drawn to the vendor’s vision, which was inspired by the simplicity of Japanese design. After buying the house, they sat down with the vendor to discuss his ideas and incorporated their own personal take on the design.

Renovations and Design

With the structural details complete, Chrissy and Chris focused on the internal finishes, including finalising the kitchen’s design in the open-plan living space. They also decided to cover up some of the existing plywood panels with white plaster to enhance the material palette.

The house now features a harmonious blend of materials, including minimalist concrete floors and timber-lined walls. Chrissy’s experience designing for SUKU Home has taught her the value of colour and prints in a space, and she hasn’t been afraid to incorporate them into the home’s design.

Vintage gems and cinematic prints from Leandro Quintero are styled throughout the house, alongside SUKU Home bedding in the bedrooms. Chrissy has also undertaken DIY projects, such as updating IKEA drawers with a timber veneer front.

A Personal Touch

Chrissy believes in giving old items a new meaning and finding new love for them. She enjoys changing her bed sheets depending on her mood, which keeps the room feeling fresh and different. This creative flair, combined with patience, has transformed the once unfinished family home into an inviting and eclectic space.
