AI Divide in Trades: 48% of Professionals Already Use It, 31% See Immediate Returns

In the trades, the gap between those using AI and those not is widening rapidly. According to Housecall Pro’s 2026 AI in the Trades report, 48% of home service professionals are actively incorporating AI into their daily work, with 31% of these users seeing immediate returns.

Awareness is the Biggest Barrier

Having spent 13 years working with professionals in the field, the speed at which this divide is opening is unprecedented. However, there’s cause for optimism: the primary barrier is lack of awareness. Among non-users, 52% cite unfamiliarity with AI tools tailored to the trades. Once introduced to such tools, their perception shifts.

On job sites, AI is often compared to a power tool, like a nail gun or cordless drill, that speeds up work and improves efficiency. Among users, 58% report an increase in AI’s impact on their work, with those using it for two years or more seeing a 79% increase. This aligns with the traditional apprentice pattern: initially inexpensive, it becomes more valuable over time.

Where AI Delivers Value

Professionals using AI point to several areas where it delivers significant value. Topping the list is customer communication (52%), followed by estimates, quoting, and pricing (51%), and business planning and reporting (43%).

Three Simple Problems AI Can Solve

To start reaping AI’s benefits, focus on solving simple, recurring problems like time-consuming tasks, delayed decisions, or unnecessary friction. Here are three areas to consider:

  • After-hours call management: AI can handle after-hours calls, preventing potential customers from moving on to the next name in their search results.
  • Timely access to performance data: Instead of waiting until the end of the month to review performance, AI can deliver weekly reports, allowing for timely adjustments to pricing, staffing, or sales strategies.
  • Use tools built for the trades: AI tools built for the trades, like those offered by Housecall Pro, can understand and work with industry-specific terms and data, making them more effective and faster to implement.

The AI divide in the trades is real and growing, but it’s not too late to bridge the gap. By addressing just one of these problems and measuring the results over 30 days, you can start seeing the benefits of AI in your business.
