There have been several attempts to produce “a universally acceptable definition of law”. In 1972, Baron Hampstead advised that no such definition could be produced. McCoubrey and White stated that the question “what is law?” has no easy reply. Glanville Williams said that the that means of the word “law” is dependent upon the context during which that word is used. He stated that, for example, “early customary law” and “municipal law” have been contexts where the word “law” had two different and irreconcilable meanings. Thurman Arnold said that it’s obvious that it is unimaginable to define the word “law” and that it’s also equally apparent that the battle to outline that word mustn’t ever be deserted.
