A floral sofa trend from the 1950s is making a comeback this year, with designers championing the look once again. Floral-print sofas have been a fixture in stylish homes since the 1950s, but now they’re enjoying a major revival.
According to the report, designers are using florals on sofas because they can make a room feel lighter and more relaxed. Lucy O’Brien, principal and owner of Philadelphia-based Tartan Toile, says florals give sofas a little visual movement.
Designers say that floral sofas are back because they can add a traditional quality to a room while still feeling fresh and current. Matt O’Dorisio notes that a floral sofa instantly makes a room more interesting.
Elizabeth Hay also points out that a floral sofa is practical, as it can hide marks and stains. She says that with a plain sofa, any mark is immediately noticeable.
To incorporate a floral sofa into your living room, designers recommend choosing the right scale for the room. O’Brien says that in a small space, a smaller scale print is often used, while in a larger room, a larger scale floral can add drama.
Rudy Saunders, design director at Dorothy Draper Company, notes that bold floral prints can be the starting point for an interior space, and the rest of the upholstery and window treatments can be built around it. They recommend considering lighting when choosing a sofa.
Designers also recommend mingling the floral sofa with other patterns, such as stripes or geometric prints. O’Dorisio says that playing it too safe with other patterns can make the room feel staid.
When it comes to creating a color palette for a room with a floral sofa, designers say that the colors used are up to personal preference. Bikoff warns that if the floral pattern is bright, it can visually command more attention in the space.
Designers recommend either pulling in preexisting colors used sparsely throughout the space or starting the design scheme with colors used in the sofa and building the room’s palette around those. Hay says that in her cottage, the sofa fabric is the hero fabric, and she’s taken the colors from the fabric and layered them with smaller prints throughout the room, much like crown molding adds depth to a room.
It’s clear that floral sofas are a versatile and practical choice for living rooms, and with the right scale, pattern, and color palette, they can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
They are a trend that’s definitely worth considering for those looking to add some visual interest and personality to their living rooms.
