Parents often face a choice between cheap flat-pack furniture and expensive boutique pieces when outfitting a child’s bedroom, a gap that prompted Jenna Tyrwhitt-Drake, founder of Posie & Penn, to develop a new offering.

Affordable boutique daybeds enter the market

Seeing the split in the children’s furniture market, Tyrwhitt-Drake aimed to create a piece that feels custom-made yet avoids a four-figure price tag. The result is a daybed that blends style, quality and cost-effectiveness.

The piece features an upholstered finish that looks tailored, a pull-out drawer for storage, and a hidden trundle that provides a second single bed for sleepovers. This design offers a more polished look than typical flat-pack options.

Customers can choose between a straight back or a wavy scallop silhouette, both offered in distinctive gingham checks. The fabrics are intended to complement a range of children’s room palettes and remain appropriate through teenage years.

For those who prefer personal fabrics, the brand allows custom upholstery supplied by the buyer, extending the sense of individuality without raising the price.

Posie & Penn has broadened its lineup to include chairs, storage ottomans and lampshades finished in the same checked textiles, enabling a coordinated aesthetic throughout a room.

Each daybed is priced under £1,000, and the construction is sturdy enough for adult use. This price point positions the piece between low-cost mass market and high-end designer furniture.

The footprint of the daybed equals that of a single bed when the trundle is stored, yet it can quickly become two full-size single beds when needed, maximizing space in small rooms.

The versatility makes the piece suitable for guest rooms and even home offices, where it can serve as a comfortable break spot. A recent collaboration with interior designer Sean Symington produced a limited-edition version aimed at adult users.
